The Fifth Shell Darwin International Guitar Festival
19th Century Summer Course

directed by

Carlo Barone

After the success of the 19th Century Summer Course at previous Darwin International Guitar Festivals Carlo Barone is returning this year to further explore the performance practices of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

On this occasion he will be accompanied by brilliant young Dutch guitarist Izhar Elias, who will demonstrate many of the interpretive practices of the period on a period instrument.

The Summer Course will also feature performances of the Giuliani third concerto for terz guitar, with soloist Adrian Walter, a little known late Boccherini symphony, which includes a prominent guitar part featuring soloist Izhar Elias, and the first 20th C performance of a newly discovered concerto by Matteo Barbi.

The Summer Course will offer a "resume" of the changing role of the guitar during the stylistic transition that occurred from the end of 18th century to the romantic style of the mid 19th century.

Interpretive aspects of the course will explore the "Italian" style, the "gallant style", and Eastern European influences.

The program will be delivered through a series of masterclasses and lectures and will cover the following topics:

  • Solo and chamber literature
  • Instrumental techniques
  • Nineteenth century didactic methods
  • Research and cataloguing of original sources
  • Interpretive practices drawn from comparative studies of period treatises, both
