International Perspective

JohnWilliams

We are again delighted to be able to welcome John Williams as our major featured artist for the 2002 Shell Darwin International Guitar Festival.

During the Festival John Williams will be involved in a number of performances including a presentation on his recent work performing and arranging African music and a performance with the Darwin Symphony Orchestra.

John will also present a series of classes during the Festival. His classes have always been a highlight of the Festival with his special ability to draw players and audience alike into the music being presented and opening doors for future thought.

International Artisits

As part of our International Perspective period, we are happy to welcome back leading exponent of the nineteenth century guitar, Carlo Barone. Carlo will run a series of workshops focusing on the performance practice of the nineteenth century. These workshops will be of interest to all musicians who perform music from this period.

Making his first visit to Australia is the stunning Czech guitarist Pavel Steidl. Well know through his award winning recording of the complete Legnani caprices Pavel brings a new interpretive vigour to the works of the late romantic period.. Pavel Steidl's interpretations of Mertz brings a life to the music that one imagines has not happened since Mertz himself performed the pieces. Pavel is equally at home on his period Viennese instrument or performing his own original works on the modern guitar - an event not to be missed.

A successful feature of previous Festivals has been our focus on early plucked string instruments, much of whose repertoire has become an integral part of the repertoire of the 20th century guitar. Leading Spanish early music specialist, Jose Miguel Moreno will present a concert featuring music for vihuela and baroque guitar. Jose Miguel has become well known internationally not only through his performing but also through his record company, Glossa Music.

Jose Maria Gallardo del Rey has become well known to Australian audiences since his first visit to Australia for the 1995 Darwin International Guitar Festival. In 2002, Jose Maria will be presenting a special concert with the Northern Territory University Chamber Orchestra.

Judicael Perroy from France and Lily Afshar from the USA will be making their first visit to Australia for the Fifth Darwin International Guitar Festival. Both these fine artists will present a solo recital during the festival.

Chamber music will play an important part of the Darwin International Guitar Festival. Performances by Dutch based ensemble Z.O.O. Duo and the Ogden/Tanner Duo (percussion and guitar) will be highlights of our chamber music series.

A special evening concert will feature a performance by Maximo Diego Pujol of his complete works for guitar and string quartet.
