DARWIN COMPOSITION COMPETITION

The Darwin Composition Competition has been initiated to stimulate compositional interest in the guitar and to create an environment where composers can develop skills in composing for the guitar in a chamber music setting.

The Darwin Composition Competition will provide an opportunity for emerging composers to have their works presented at a series of workshops where they will be rehearsed by leading professional performers participating in the Darwin International Guitar Festival. All successful entrants will also have the opportunity to work under the mentorship of a leading Australian composer during the Australian Composers Workshops.

All composers submitting a work for consideration in the Darwin Composition Competition must also be registrants in the Australian Composers Workshops.

The competition will be run in four stages:

Stage One

Selection of up to eight works to progress to stage two of the competition.

Stage Two

Intensive rehearsal of works selected following stage one. This process will occur as part of the Australian Composers' Workshops.

The composer of each selected work reaching this stage will be allocated a mentor composer who will assist in the rehearsal process

Stage Three

Selection of works for presentation at a concert during the Darwin International Guitar Festival running concurrently with the Australian Composers' Workshops.

Stage Four

Selection of a composer to be commissioned to write a piece for the 2004 Darwin International Guitar Festival.
